HAGERSTOWN - On Saturday, Hagerstown resident Jayme K. Detwiler and her fiance, Matthew E. Pitzer, mailed invitations to their April wedding.
On Sunday, Pitzer died in a car crash on the couple's way to church.
Maryland State Police said officers received reports of a single-vehicle crash on a ramp from northbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Interstate 70 Sunday at about 8:50 a.m. When troopers arrived at the scene, a 1996 Honda Civic was found off the right side of the road, resting against a tree, and a passenger was found dead, according to police.
Pitzer, 27, of Fairfield, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene. Detwiler, 26, of Virginia Avenue in Hagerstown, was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment, police said.
A Washington County Hospital spokeswoman said Detwiler was being treated there, but that no other information was available on her condition.
Maryland State Police Cpl. Richard Poffenberger said there were not believed to be any extenuating circumstances leading to the crash.
"(Detwiler) just got off the side of the road and overcorrected, went back off the other side (of the road) and down the embankment," Poffenberger said.
He said the car was "destroyed" when it slammed into a tree.
Poffenberger said the crash investigation will continue today. No charges were filed Sunday, he said.
Patrick Detwiler said Sunday that his younger sister sustained injuries to her arms and lungs but was conscious at the hospital. He said his sister "doesn't remember anything about the accident."
Patrick Detwiler said the couple was on the way to services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Mount Aetna Road when the crash occurred. He said his sister and Pitzer were to be married April 22.
He said Sunday that the family was not sure how much of the day's events Jayme Detwiler was able to grasp.
"We really have to wait until tomorrow to know how much of this has sunk in," Patrick Detwiler said.
