John B. Mater, the second son of John and Eve (Utz) Mater, was born in Cumberland County, Penn., January 6, 1832. John received only a limited education, as his father needed his services on the farm, where he remained until attaining his majority. December 26, 1854, he married Miss Mary Baker, a native of Pennsylvania. Remaining in Pennsylvania ten years after marriage, he came to Indiana in 1864. He worked at farming in La Gro Township, Wabash County, two years before purchasing. In 1870, he bought one farm containing eighty acres and an additional farm since of seventy-five acres. Both of them are improved. He had no inheritance. His success in life is owing to his foresight as a business man and his industry as a farmer.Mr. and Mrs. M. are the parents of seven children, of whom six survive, viz., Anna Elizabeth, Joseph H., John J., Samuel Franklin, Daniel Harvey and Charles Edward. Mr. and Mrs. Mater are members of the Dunkard Church.
