Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) - June 21, 2006 Deceased Name: Christopher Patrick Benedict: Season of Sharing recipient dies SUMMARY: Inspiration Kit Benedict of Elsie prompted gas cards to be donated to rural families Kit Benedict, 20, of Elsie, who helped inspire a record $242,679 in donations to The Oregonian's 2005 Season of Sharing campaign, died of acute lymphoblastic leukemia Saturday, June 17, 2006. The skate-boarding, guitar-playing Benedict endured two relapses and a bone marrow transplant from his sister, Katelin, before dying at home with his family. "He was an inspiration," said Pat Benedict, his mother, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was pregnant with Kit and put her own health care on hold during his 22-month struggle. Christopher Patrick Benedict was born Jan. 24, 1986, in Portland. When he was 5, his parents left their Cedar Hills home for the rural life near Elsie in the Coast Range. "Kit," the fifth of six children, was home-schooled. He had completed his high school studies, bought his first car and was working in Seaside when he was diagnosed with the aggressive cancer in September 2004. Kit's face was featured in The Oregonian's annual holiday giving campaign, prompting readers to contribute a new computer and video games to Kit as well as gas cards for rural families who must travel with a sick child. In the months before he died, Kit recorded a radio interview about staying at Doernbecher Children's Hospital "at an age in between child and adult, ... that age where sitting in the hospital is not the funnest thing." He was inspired to be a nurse, but said, "I can't look ahead very much, I have to take it day to day." Kit is survived by his parents, Pat and Michael; brothers, Matthew and Nicholas; sisters, Michaela, Katelin and Casey; and four grandparents. A memorial is planned for July 1 at Beaverton Foursquare Church.
