Following from Oceana County History 1880-1990 Volume I page 180 submitted by Nina Chapman: JURGEN H. BUTTLEMAN Jurgen Herman Buttelman (1823-1899) and his wife Marie Wilhelmine (1829-1893) settled on land west of old 99 and at the south end of Oceana County in Claybanks Township. They had a family of eight children. The seventh son, George Eddy Buttelman (1864-1951) helped his parents develop the land from a wooded area into a fine farm of eithty acres. George was married March 31, 1892 to Augusta W. Lauterberg (1872-1960) also a pioneer Claybanks resident and they lived on the Buttelman farm. He served on Claybanks Township Board, the board of review, also moderator of the Green School. He was a former pupil at the Green School, which has been attended by their children and grandchildren. A farmer for more than sixty-five years, Mr. Buttelman worked on the farm until his illness and he died at the hospital. Mrs. Buttelman took over her first baby case when she was 14 years old, under her mother's supervision, and at 15 yrs. was doing practical nursing unaided. She told how she was lost in a blinding snowstorm one night while attempting to reach a home a mile away where help was needed. Her lantern went out and she missed the fence which was to have been her guide. The neighbor anxiously awaiting her arrival put a lamp in the window and it was that which led her to their house. The Buttelmans' were life long members of the Claybanks methodis Church and she was communion steward for more than thirty-five years. There were four children born to this family. 1. Jesse Rue (1893-1966) served in World War I in France and Germany. After his return from the war, he went to Iowa to live and learned to be a barber. Married Gladys Makin in 1926 - and have four sons. 2. Mabel Ethel (1895-1977) married Carl Kroll in 1917 and lived on a farm. They had two sons. 3. Emma Augusta (1900-1953) married Louis Passarelli, a barber. They had a daughter and a son. 4. Nina Leona (1911- ) married Garrit Westfield in 1932 and lived in Allegan for five years. Moved back to Claybanks in 1937 to help her parents. They had a daughter and twin girls. In 1948 they moved to a farm in Muskegon County. Garrit Westfield (1909-1975). |
