Oceana Herald Journal - August 21, 1969 Ex-Area Man Big Lake Victim Oceana County's third drowning victim of 1969 is Howard Fekken, 27, of Mt. Pleasant, who died while swimming off the Methodist Youth Camp shoreline on Lake Michigan Saturday. Mr. Fekken was a native of New Era. State police said Mr. Fekken was swimming with two other men, Robert Herin, 26, and Larry Irvine, 25, both of Shelby, when he apparently became exhausted near the second sand bar in teh lake. The victim apparently panicked and fought off his companions in their rescue try, and he went down in eight feet of water. He was pulled to the beach about 10 minutes later, and Dr. F. R. Lafoliette of Munster, Ind., who was at the scene, administered artificial respiration. The reviving attempt was continued during the Oceana County Emergency Ambulance Service's trip to the Oceana Hospital, but it was to no avail. He was pronounced dead by medical examiner Dr. Dale Barker. Mr. Fekken was born at Shelby July 1, 1942, and married Arta Herin of Ferry Aug. 9, 1968. Surviving are his wife; his perents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake B. Fekken of New Era; and two brothers, Edward of Rothbury and Leroy of New Era. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the New Era Reformed Church, with burial in the New Era Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Cooper-Harris Funeral Home at Shelby. |
